Xi'an lies on the Guanzhong Plain in the middle reaches of the Yellow River. It stretches 204 km from east to west and 116 km from north to south, with a total area of 10,097.01 square kilometers. Its urban geological structure spans two major geological units: the Qinling Geosynclinal Fold Belt and the North China Platform. Xi'an has one of China's most dramatic urban elevation differences. The towering Qinling Mountains and the flat Weihe Plain form its distinctive landforms.

Xi'an features a warm temperate and semi-humid continental monsoon climate with distinct four seasons and pleasant weather all year round. Known since ancient times as “ Chang'an Encircled by Eight Rivers”, the city is surrounded by eight waters: Ba River, Chan River, Jue River, Hao River, Zao River, Feng River, Wei River, and Jing River. Besides, several water systems including Hei River, Shichuan River, Lao River and Ling River also run across its territory.
